D.E.N.I.M. Pharrell has been a clear creative force in the music industry even since the N.E.R.D. days, and when it comes to fashion choices he and Helen Lasichanh certainly do not hold back on their creativity. The best part is they always pull it off. As individuals, they are both examples of denim-on-denim perfection, and give a hipster vibe to the denim trend. Together though, they once again prove they are the coolest couple on the red carpet.
Not So High: The VMA’s past and present prove that this is not your typical awards show. There are zero rules - ahem, Miley. So when Karlie Kloss comes in cute flat sandals, it’s not odd, it’s awesome. Girls love shoes, and often use special occasion to showcase their collections. But let’s face it, they really freaking hurt sometimes. Celebs like Emma Thompson know what’s up. So you heard it here first: Dressing up a flat pair of sandals, loafers or anything of the flat variety is highly encouraged.
Wonderful Rebel: Rebel Wilson wins for the most accessible red-carpet inspiration at the VMAs. The black-and-pink dress is so versatile, fun and trendy in asymmetrical. Her dip-dyed pink hair adds a bit of edge to the overall look, perfect for the VMAs. The pink lip may have taken it one step too far, but for anyone recreating this look sans pink hair, go for the bold lip! Need even mention the rad clutch? This look cannot be replicated fast enough.
Black and Bare: Yes, Lily Aldrige is beautiful. Yes, she looks amazing in this plunging Alexandre Vauthier black dress, but she can look beautiful and amazing in so much, that this sleek and simple choice isn’t very exciting for the VMAs. She is a knock out in the dress, but was definitely not the most dynamic girl seen in Taylor’s squad.
Maternity Woes: Kim’s effort to wear designer, “non-maternity” during her pregnancies does not go unnoticed. She is a brave example to all women that if you got it, flaunt it. Show off those curves and dress for your body type, pregnant or not. Unfortunately, this custom Balmain seems like so much fabric and the boxy frame doesn’t do Kim’s pregnancy figure justice. It is hard being pregnant and dressing up, especially in the spotlight, but Kim’s past pregnancy looks were much for flattering sans Met Gala 2013.
Word Vomit: Ok, so Blac Chyna and Amber Rose took the stage to make a statement and use this time to make for an awkward run-in with their exes Tyga and Kanye West. The skin tight nude canvas displayed painted words that the two ladies said they are often called. They are showing the haters and sticking up for themselves which is empowering and great, but they are sacrificing it for a look that doesn’t really work too well. The outfits are a little too DIY, and we can think of much more finished approach to typography.
No Fault in These Stars: To get straight to the point, this dress is a have to have it. Unfortunately, this Saint Laurent beauty comes with a hefty price tag. Cara Delevigne is VMA perfection in this short, metallic style. With simple, strappy shoes and easy, side-swept hair, this look is the perfect special occasion inspiration for the non-celebrity folks of the world. Put this in the memory bank for holiday season and New Year’s!
Girl squad status: If a perfect girl squad was crafted based on style alone, Vanessa Hudgens would definitely be a first round draft pick. She has perfected the effortless outfit effect here and whenever she’s spotted looking amazing around the streets of New York. The flowing hair and the flowery Naheem Khan dress paired with glittery accents (including her nails and makeup!), makes us swoon. Added bonus! Her recent broken finger isn't holding a girl back from a coordinated outfit. The metallic hand wrap matches the look!
Good for You: Sleek, sparkling and sexy, this dress does Selena good. The metallic knit has a bit of an edge, but offers a balance of feminine by hugging her curves. And those shoes! The raised hem is kind of amazing and works well with the slight flare to show off those platform stunners. This Calvin Klein number is the perfect transition from summer to fall: a flicker of trending metallic, plus gothic vibes seen on Fall 2015 runways.
